i don't have the tom lords discography, but i have bruyninckx, and it lists about 130.

if you want, i can copy those pages and send them to you, trev. i just didn't want to clutter the thread with four pages of stuff.

I can't imagine it's very many, Trev (130 isn't really that many), and I don't remember seeing heaps.
It'd be interesting to compare the Jazz Disc with bruyninckx. My academic researcher instincts are screaming at me to consult a range of sources and not rely entirely on the JD.

I'm sure everyone else knows this already, but one thing I noticed: sometimes the same band's listed under alternative names. For the most part you'll catch them all under blanket terms (eg all the Ellington-led bands are under 'Ellington', wether they're actually called 'Duke Ellington orchestra' or 'Duke Ellington's cotton club orch').
I think the MBR actually used a number of 'alternative' names, didn't they (I can't check as my laptop and music collection are currently in pieces on the dining room table. ARGH)? Names like Mills Blue Ribbon Band, Mills Blue Ribbon Boys... ? I'm trying to remember what I saw last week...
So I guess it depends what you're looking for - everything with a particular personnel listing, everything under one name, everything featuring a particular arranger...?

Looking at the Chick Webb stuff, I was struck by a sudden desire to get seriously completist. I think it might be an ob-con illness, Trev: watch yourself. :D

Trev,
When you do go complete...
mind letting us know what albums and what individual tracks you bought to make it thus? :-D
It doesn't sound like a bad idea!

Or you could post it here, I'm sure there are others who would like to see that material and we have wasted four pages on less.

Thanks! I think I'm only missing alternate takes or unissued takes. Does "unissued" mean that it's sitting in a vault somewhere but has never been out on any format?

yes--though it may also be lost, i guess.

this is current to 2004--anything issued in the last five years may still be labeled as "unissued". i haven't bought the upgrade to the latest edition, though i'm thinking of catching up again this year.

Okay, here's the Mills Blue Rhythm Band Buying Guide.

1) Get Mills Blue Rhythm Band 1933-1936 on Retrieval. This Double CD has the best sound (John RT Davies) and the best tracks.

2) Then get the earlier stuff via Mills Blue Rhythm Band Blue Rhythm which covers 1931 to 1932 and Rhythm Spasm which covers 1932 to 1933. Both of these are on HEP and also remastered by John RT Davies

3) Then if you are lucky, find Classics 1936-1937 for the 1937 recordings

4) For the completists, there are 2 live recordings (Body and Soul, and Ride Red Ride) on this Bunny Berrigan All Star Broadcasts disc by Soundcraft. You could also get the 1931 recordings by King Carter & His Royal Orchestra (the same band) on Go Harlem by Frog. And... there's an LP floating around with the 8 "Mills Blue Rhythm Band" recordings from 1947 which is really a different band altogether.

After this you'll have everything except some alternate takes, the 3 unissued recordings of Tiger Rag, Radio Rhythm, and Trickeration...

...and 5 soppy vocals: Solitude, Until the Real Thing Comes Along, In a Sentimental Mood, Carry Me Back to Green Pastures and Since I've Heard From You.

Enjoy!

I'm really enjoying this thread... uh-oh. Just given this thread the kiss of death (knocking on wood now).

Thanks for posting this stuff Trev (and lipi and everyone) - I'm just getting interested in discographies and it's really neat to see other people's approaches to 'collecting'.

For interest I played "Barrelhouse" as one of the tracks for the Jumptown Jam Lindy Hop JnJ on Friday. :D
