Marvin Gaye: swing and blues

#1 Post by Yakov » Fri Sep 10, 2004 8:57 am

I found a 1990-era reissue box set of Marvin Gaye at the unviersity library yesterday... there's a great version of "Straighten Up And Fly Right." Apparently he really liked singing classic standards & ballads. Not much else swingable on that set, it's mostly drippy ballads.

(I was actually surprised how indifferent I was to most of the other R&B material on the box, except for "Let's Get It On." I don't even particularly like his original version of "Sexual Healing," finding the 1983 electronic beats to be very dated; I greatly prefer the more recent remix by Shaggy.)

You might check out,

That is the album that "Straighten Up and Fly Right" was drawn from. The songs are all similar to the Nat King Cole versions.

You can also play "It's only a Paper Moon" and "Send For Me." If you are the kind of DJ prone to playing the Nat King Cole versions, you would enjoy this album.
