I just stumbled across the elusive Big 18 albums (Live Echos and More Live Echos) on eMusic. It doesn't look like anyone has mentioned it on the board:

We're sorry. There are no albums available for download in your country (United States) at this time.

Yup, some great late (mid-40's) swing. Only the first four tracks feature Edmond Hall though, so eMusic has the album credits wrong.

Yeah, I got that one, Russ. It's good. I like 'Bugle Breaks' and 'John Hardy' a lot. But my favourite is Ellington at the Hollywood Empire: Original 1949 Transcriptions:

There's a version of 'CJam Blues' which is AMAZING - I played it at Canberrang one late night (you might have heard it?).

I'm a big fat sucker for these transcripts at the moment. I especially love the announcements. Soon my sets are going to be nothing but crackly spoken intros and outros.

... I think I especially like the Ellington ones because they often feel a bit wilder and a bit more energised than some of the more familiar jobs - as though they were letting go a bit more...

I really enjoyed the two above album recommendations. I searched on Duke Ellington's material too and I found the following box set of radio transcriptions and live recordings:

It includes also the aforementioned 1949 transcriptions.

A very general recommendation is the German Encyclopedia of Jazz series. 100 cds each of classic jazz, swing (mainly small groups) and big band. The sound is often better than the Chrono Classics. Essential downloads include Frankie Newton, Tommy Dorsey, Muggsy Spanier and a few dozens more...

Just come across this set of compilations put together by one 'DJ Wuthe' - two entitled 'Swing for Dancers', one slow, one medium, and four entitled 'Balboa Swing'.

I've not more than glance through the 'Swing for Dancers' compilations - but it looks like there's some pretty solid stuff on them, and if nothing else they'd be an excellent resource for a new DJ. Listening through the Balboa albums at the moment, and there's a lot of the usual suspects, plus quite a few great tracks I've not heard before. Well worth a look.

They're also available on Spotify.
[EDIT]Also available to download on Amazon (UK)[/EDIT]

These are compilations put together by German DJ Steven Wuthe from his massive 78 rpm record collection. I discussed Steven and his compilations in the news on episode #49 of Hey Mister Jesse (thanks to the recommendation from Robert Cullen in the Netherlands).

I think that the above link is wrong. Is it supposed to point to an eMusic list of songs?

[edit] Or maybe, his compilations are not available on eMusic USA. Did he make them from his 78 collection?[/edit]

Thanks,
Lorenzo

Hey!! There's a Hudson-De Lange Orchestra track on there! And a track by Will Hudson and His Seven Swingsters! (Both on Balboa Vol. 3). And one more Will Hudson track (on Balboa Vol. 4)! Nice!
