Lester Young Favorite Tracks

#1 Post by Jerry_Jelinek » Fri Jul 30, 2004 9:21 am

Hi,

Lester Young's birthday is Aug. 27. I'm in the planning stages of a radio tribute to him.

I'm borrowing a lot of material from our local libraries and I thought I would ask the forum this.

What is your favorite Lester Young track? It can be with Basie or any other group. Billie Holiday songs etc.

To get it rolling, I've borrowed from the library a nice session done in 1952 - Lester Young with the Oscar Peterson Trio. This is a nice blowing session for Lester in high fidelty. Everything on this recording is great for listening.

Favorite Lester track? You mean today?

Right now, I'm very partial to "Lester Leaps In" from the Lester Young/Nat "King" Cole jubilee session with Buddy Rich.

Do you have a CD reference number or link for this session?

Thanks,

Great album! I love him singing on "Two To Tango" and play it often. ;)

It's not all Lester, but you have to include the Billie Holiday track from _The Sound of Jazz_, "Fine and Mellow" which represents the last time they played together.

Lester Smooths It Out
Jumpin' With Symphony Sid
Blue Lester
Yard work sucks. I would much rather dj.

Keep the ideas coming.

I just borrowed from the library the CD Pres and Teddy - The lester Young and Teddy Wilson Quartet
Verve CD 831 270-2

Some great blowing by Lester and Teddy Wilson along with Gene Ramey on bass and Jo Jones on drums.

Highly recommended for listening.
