Jazz Veteran Illinois Jacquet Dies

Jazz tenor sax legend Illinois Jacquet died today (July 22) in New York after suffering a heart attack. He was 81.

Born in Broussard, La., Jacquet was raised in Houston. As a teenager, he joined Lionel Hampton's big band, and made his mark in 1942 with his featured number "Flying Home." In 1944, Jacquet was featured in Norman Granz's first "Jazz at the Philharmonic" concert at Philharmonic Hall in Los Angeles; the saxophonist's tough, ecstatic solo style made him a fixture at Granz's shows for years to come.

Yeah that was his last show.

There is a thread on Yehoodi with more details, for those who are interested. George Gee started the thread.

Illinois Jacquet is my guy. I've got 5 Ilinois Jacquet tunes in the Campus Five book, besides "Flying Home" and "Jammin' the Blues." I was happy to have found some of his solo work and to be keeping those tunes out there, I just didn't expect to have to be doing tributes to him at our upcoming gigs. This is pretty sad.

(These two cheap sets will cover most of his "original era" career)

The Lionel Hampton Story -- classics of swing and blues, includes the all-time famous "Flyin' Home" with the Jacquet solo.

The Illinois Jacquet Story -- lots of rockin' R&B featuring giants of the genre including Wynonie Harris. This set duplicates the very expensive 1945-50 Mosaic set. (No alternate takes, but bonus tracks from JATP.)

This is both sad and weird. Yesterday morning I took out the Proper Box set to hear it in my car.

RIP Illinois. Another great one gone. Not many left.

God both of those box sets. I'll be dedicating some of my radio show to the man.
