I'm in the process of finding a list of singers that recorded with Basie - while Basie was alilve.

Here is a list I have so far:

I hate to admit that I actually knew this off the top of my head, but I don't think Sarah Vaughn sang with Basie, himself. The most common Lindy Hopper album entitled something like "Count Basie and Sarah Vaughn" with "The Gentleman is a Dope" and "Until I Met You" (Corner Pocket with lyrics) is the Basie band WITHOUT Basie, despite Basie getting top billing. Same thing with this one:



Unless there's something else, she didn't actually sing with him.

John Hendricks sang the Joe Williams tunes on a lot of live Roulette recordings in the 60s.

That's all the name I can think of to drop right now. I feel so inferior.

Actually in looking at the CDs I have with Sarah and 'Basie' - session 'G' is the one I have on CD.

The piano player is not Basie, but Kirk Stuart. So it might be that Sarah never recorded with Basie, just the Basie band.

There's a live recording from 1954, _The Birdland Allstars at Carnegie Hall_ that lists Sarah Vaughan with the Basie band on some tracks but i don't have the cd in front of me so can't tell if Basie played on those tracks. There's also a dvd of a tribute to Basie at Carnegie Hall that reunites several of the Basie singers including Joe Williams ("number one son"), Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan, and George Benson. I know Bennett and Vaughan used their own pianist for their sets but i think Basie may have been playing on the jam with all the singers. I'll check and let you know later.

On iTunes, they have a Basie album titled "Basie Picks the Winners", it is part of the out-of-print Verve Vault series.

A version of "Nobody Knows When You Are Down And Out" is credited to Count Basie and Billy Byers.

Is he is the singer? If so, that is somebody to add to the list.

It would be cool if somebody more familar with the various Basie vocalists (or Billy Byers) can check the tune out and share their opinion.

A version of "Nobody Knows When You Are Down And Out" is credited to Count Basie and Billy Byers.

No Billy Byers would be the arranger. Wrote lots of great swinging charts.

If nobody folows up on this, I'll try to remember to check my discography at home for this track. Based on the Billy Byers arrangement, I'm guessing the time era is between 1955-1965.

If you do a Google search on 'Billy Byers' you'll find some info on him.

Another Basie singer is Mary Stallings. Apparently Jimmy Witherspoon and Ray Charles sang with Basie but i haven't seen the recordings.

I looked up the track "Nobody Knows When You Are Down And Out" and found no reference in my discogrpahy of Basie recording it.

The sessions that Billy Byers arranged for Basie are from 1964-1966:

'Pop Goes Basie' - 1964
'Count Basie and His Orchestra' - 1964
'Basie Picks the Winners' - 1965
'Count Basie/ Arthur Prysock'- 1966
'Basie Swingin, Voices Singin' - 1966

I own the Basie/ Prysock and it is some nice arranging. Probably not much for swing dancing.

The Pop Goes Basie are really neat arranging. I've heard some of this, but don't have it my collection.

The other LPs I'm not familiar with.

According to the discogrpahy, the singers are as follows:

Leon Thomas sings on Pop Goes the Basie and Basie Picks the Winners.

Obviously Arthur Prysock is singing on his LP with Basie.

The last LPs listed above has the Alan Copeland Singers (6 guys and 6 gals).

That is as much info that I can find on sessions with Byers arranging for Basie.

I think the answer to my question is Leon Thomas. Not many tracks on the album have vocals. In any case, he is a new singer to the list.

I will listen to the song again and compare it with some verified Leon Thomas tracks and get a final answer.
