I recently saw the clip Jazz Dance, which had a combo including Willie the Lion Smith and some other players. I was wondering if anybody could recommend good later recordings of the Lion or James P Johnson, preferrably with small combos.

I like 1925-1937 on Chrono[lo]gical for Willie the Lion. Especially the awesome washboard sound.

Best Willie "The Lion" Smith CD is:

Willie "The Lion" Smith and his Cubs 1935-1937

Timeless Records, Audio Restoration By John R.T. Davies, the sound quality on this is amazing...

For some reason all the best stride pianists came out of Jersey, Willie, James P., Donald Lambert, even the Count (he started out as a stride pianist until he find his niche)

There's also a documentary that came out on NJN in 2001 all about the Lion, it's really a must see, he's a very interesting character...
