I never appreciated bop or fast post-bop until a few years after I had obsessively collected and listened to Swing Era music.

That's interesting. Same here. I bought a Charlie Parker album in college but thought it made no sense whatsoever. After I got into swing music I took another listen and thought "hmm, this is not bad."

I was raised on Swing, Bop and Jazz due to my Jazz Director's choices for our band. I found his swing selections to be boring, with no energy (Neal Hefti sucks). I really liked Bop for what it was, but i really didn't care for it. I appreciated it for it's technicality and creativity, but that's as far as it goes. It wasn't until later when i started listening to classic swing that I realized that's what I had been missing. The energy, and sometime simplicity of it all.

To this day I'm not really a bop fan, but i'll listen to it and and enjoy it when it's on.
