Shirley Scott

#1 Post by Jerry_Jelinek » Thu May 06, 2004 10:09 am

I just picked up a used CD of Shirley Scott.

On Impulse - GRP Presents - Shirley Scott "Roll 'Em" GRD-147

The CD is a combination of small group and Oliver Nelson arranged big band charts. Has tributes to classic swing big band charts:

Roll 'Em
For Dancers Only
Sophisticated Swing
Sometimes I'm Happy
Little Brown Jug
Stompin' at the Savoy
Ain't Misbehavin'
A-Tisket A-Tasket
Things Ain't What They Used to be
Tippin' In

Some killer B-3 playing and arranging.

I think most would be good for dancing also.

Does anyone else recommend Shirley Scott recordings for listening or dancing?

Love her and love this album! I play "Roll 'Em" and "For Dancers Only" quite often for dancers.

Also, "Soul Shoutin'" from Soul Shoutin' was a cult-classic here in San Francisco for years.

I'm surprised she hasn't been discussed on SwingDJs before. Thanks for bringing her up, Jerry!

I only have Legends of Acid Jazz. I like to listen to it, but haven't spun anything from it, since the tracks are a bit long. And that's saying something from me, since I'm known for playing longer tracks in So Fla.

Would like to give Soul Shoutin' a listen tho.

I am a big fan of Shirley Scott and was about to start a thread on her. I have Acid Jazz which I DJ "Hip Soul" and "Hip Twist". I also use the Roll'em CD quite often even though some tracks a very long. But this CD is solid from first to last track.

I also have "Queen of the Organ: Memorial Album". From this CD I DJ
"(Night Time Is) The Right Time" and "Señor Blues".

If you know of any other Shirley Scott CDs that are good please post here.
