Genres & Styles (who classifies some of this stuff)

#1 Post by Bob the Builder » Thu Mar 18, 2004 4:30 pm

I was looking on www.allmusic.com the other day at Mora's Modern Rhythmists. I was a little surprised to see them under
Genres: Rock
&
Style: Alternative Pop/Rock, Retro Swing.

IMHO I can’t see how you can classify Mora's Modern Rhythmists under Rock. Can anyone see any logic behind this?

I find that allmusic is often inaccurate, especially when dealing with lesser-known artists.

They also list Yoko Noge under rock which I find rather amusing.

It's probably because they came to prominence *during* the Neoswing revival. Most artists from that era are considered "Rock," regardless of their real genre. Also, as has been pointed out, Allmusic just isn't that accurate.

Lastly, I think they take a hard line on jazz (which is good) and want to keep from muddying the waters or answering emails form angry jazz purists.

I was in Amoeba browsing the blues section and I stumbled across Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys. I attempted to explain to the staff that this band was HORRIBLY misfiled, but they wouldn't hear of it.

I'm going to open an online store where you get two choices -

Music Too Fast To Enjoy
Music You Can Sink Your Teeth Into

Putting Moras under Rock is just plain wrong. I've given feedback to allmusic.com before and they sent me back email to thank me, but I can't remember if they actually incorporated the feedback...
