Irish Swing

#1 Post by djstarr » Tue Mar 16, 2004 2:29 pm

So I'm dj'ing tomorrow night - there is always a Wednesday dance at the Century even though we will be competing with St. Patrick's day.

I thought it would be fun to work in something Irish, but I'm struggling with exactly what. Perhaps a token U2 song?

Anyone have suggestions for swing songs that could be considered Irish?

How about Irish Jazz musicians? Eddie Condon perhaps?

Thanks in advance!

It's scottish, not irish, but you could always play some version of Loch Lomond..

The only Irish Swing DJ on the board looks at interest and then realises he can't add much.

Sinéad O'Connor was a swing CD with a great Dublin Acent.

I once played the Flogging Molly song "The Worst Day Since Yesterday" as a DJ challenge, and it went over ok.

It's easy to sit there and say you'd like to have more money. And I guess that's what I like about it. It's easy. Just sitting there, rocking back and forth, wanting that money.

Do you own this? All music is not too keen on it.

and check this out - courtesy of a couple of google searches: Jazz from the Shamrock Shore

I do have a version of Peg O'My Heart (Glenn Miller on Anthology of Big Band Swing) - that will make the playlist tomorrow; although since it's an instrumental it's highly unlikely anybody will get it.

And I might be reduced to working in the term "Lucky" (as a Leprauchaun) - "I'm Just a Lucky So and So", "Happy Go Lucky Local", perhaps a few tracks from Lucky Millinder....

Bing Crosby did some more 'jazzy' things in the movie Going My Way.

But from memory only, I can't recall titles, only the movie.

I have it and quite like a few songs on it. I play "Why Don't You Do Right?" fairly often.

While I am not from Ireland like you, I am of Irish descent, my name is Malone after all.

Actually, I am a mut, but Ireland is the only country that I can trace ancestors back to (County Cork).

That being said, my contribution to the thread

The Big Daddy version of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm looking for" Hard to find, they are an old local band that did covers popular songs in untraditional ways. I have never actually seen the CD that this came from, but MP3s of their music float around locally.
