Cheap and good labels/distributors

#1 Post by BryanC » Mon Mar 15, 2004 4:57 pm

So, there's the pastperfect label (http://www.pastperfect.com) that some people have talked about. I thought it would be cool to start a resource thread on good bargain distributors/labels.

I just picked up a 4 CD Slim Galliard set from Proper Records (http://www.proper.uk.com as well as http://www.propermusic.com for their internet orders and completel catalogue), I'd say that the sound quality is at least as good, if not better than the Slim and Slam: The Complete Columbia Master Takes with way more music (22-27 songs per CD). And the whole thing cost me less than $30.00 CDN. I haven't got any other experience with the Proper distribution label, but they seem to have a lot of box sets in their catalog--Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Fats Navarro, Lester Young, just to name a few.)

For any Western Canadians out there, Proper Music distributes through A&B Sound, and you'd probably save on the shipping and then some. The Slim Galliard box set came up on the website at 14.99 pounds (roughly 30 someodd dollars CDN). If you check the website, delivery is roughly 5 pounds (like $15.00 CDN). I picked up the Galliard set for 28 something before GST), and the pricing across most of the Proper Box sets seemed to be about the same, so go exploit your local A&B sound ordering section.

For any UK'ers, shipping is freaking free.
