Count Basie Auto

I am reading the Autobiography of Count Basie and absolutely love it. I am almost done, and have had a hard time putting it down. I strongly reccomend this book to any basie afficionado.
so, when i'm done I am looking for another book to read, any ideas? I was interested in something maybe ellington, or even an autobio of a white guy in LA. suggestions...

I know you're looking for swing stuff probably... but I quite enjoyed the autobiography of Miles Davis.

i'm not sure if he made it to LA but Jack Kerouac's _On the Road_ is on my list. supposedly he talks about listening to Slim Gaillard.

yeah J, I try to stay as far away from Miles and company as possible. I cannot stand to listen to that stuff
same with Slim Gaillard and Jack Kerouac.

David Margolick's Strange Fruit was worth reading. It's a biography of the song but obviously is mostly about Billie Holiday.

And also speaking of bios, does anyone else think it's a damn shame that there is not a single book available on Fletcher Henderson?
We just had a conversation about this on a local email list. So, I won't go into my tirade again.

i started Jazz 101, and in their section on swing, Fletcher Henderson was one of the subheadings along with Duke and Basie.

not a joke. I cannot stand Miles Davis, John Coltrain, Dizzy Gilespie, Slim and Slam, the standard issued stuff from those guys. I have heard one slim gaillard song that i like, and I know that coltrain played in other bands that I like, but i am just talking about what they are known for, what gets played most on the radio.
