Name members of a modern big band you'd like to see:

John Clayton bass
Jeff Hamilton or Josh C. drums
Wynton Marsalis trumpet
Junior Mance or Jay McShann piano
Ken Peplowski clarinet
Howard Alden or Barry Zweig guitar
Wycliffe Gordon trombone

any others? it's hard filling out the horns!

While I can't say no to Junior, I'd also have to add Oscar Peterson, Ray Bryant, and/or Paul Tillotson

Don't forget Clark Terry.

How 'bout Mickey Roker or Louis Bellson on Drums? (although Jeff really is amazing live)

Claude Fiddler Williams can play a song or 2.

by Greg Avakian
Irene Reed or Freddy Cole or Ernie Andrews on vocals. Kevin Mahogany if he could stick to swing/blues. Blues singer + big band = Happy Greg
Sax: Illinois Jaquet, Benny Golson(?), David Fathead Newman, and I'd like to hear Houston Persons play jazz. Greg Piccolo was amazing when I saw him playing blues.and he told me he likes trad jazz.
Lenny Solomon on violin. There's a jazz violinist in NYC named Andy something. He sometimes plays on NPR. I saw him at a house party and he was great.

Gunhild Carling - Trombone (or trumpet, harmonica etc)
Max Carling - Violin (or clarinet)

If you ever get to Sweden or manage to catch them around in Europe, you just got to see and hear these siblings.

You mentioning Allen Vache reminds me of last year's Sweet and Hot, when Allen Vache and three other clarinetists (Bob Draga among them) got up and played with a rhythm section for the "Hot Licorice" event.

Now, for my money, there is no jazz instrument with a purer tone than a well-played clarinet. When the four reeds motioned for the rhythm section to drop out and all you could hear were four intertwining melodic lines, high and pure, it sent shivers through me. It was the most exalted I have heard any live jazz in a long time.
