Currently my favorite is Ellington's 5:46 version from this album:

The only version I own is on "Preservation Jazz" by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band - a nice album, but most of the sound is really bad so I don't DJ off of it.

Sidney Bechet one rocks hard. I haven't heard these others.

The version I have is off of a disconforme set (Complete 1939-1951 Blue Note Master Takes), which I'm guessing is pulled from Runnin' Wild.

I like the Louis Armstrong version from 1930, his band goes crazy on it...I wanted to start a thread about this song a while back but you guys beat me to the punch!

I own a couple versions but the Armstrong version (on the This is Jazz disc, which I think is the 1930 version) is smokin. I wouldn't want to dance to it, but wow, hot stuff.

that's a nice version. if you want to try a shorter version, there's Duke Ellington _Tiger Rag (280'')['37] _The Duke's Men- Small Groups Vol 1 Disk 1 _15. For a novelty version, the Mills Bros has one with lyrics, The Mills Brothers _Tiger Rag (290) _Greatest Hits 1932-1940 _14.

The Wild Rose All-Stars (local dixieland-style band in Calgary) does a great rendition of Tiger Rag.

Wow, I like that version a lot, especially the low brass. Looks like a very fun album, too.

ellington small groups (or units as the case may be) are great. perhaps deserving of another thread.
