I'm looking for a version of the above song which I believe is sung by Ella. I think it's a live recording and she even does an imitation of Della Reese singing the same song.

Does anyone know what song I'm talking about and where I can find it?

Taken a class with Steven recently? I think the version you're looking for is on Something to Live For.

The rest of the choices are gems from Fitzgerald's career, including ... a live 1962 recording of "Bill Bailey" which finds this uncanny mimic doing impressions of Della Reese and Pearl Bailey.

I just bought that CD, the songs Bill Bailey and Ol' Man Mose are good, I was a bit disappointed with the rest of the collection, most of the songs were kinda boring, and there were a few I already had.

Mmmm...I love that version of "Bill Bailey" on Something To Live For. Rayned played it for me at Beatown, and I immediately had to run out and get that 2-CD set even though that was the only song on it that I didn't already have by Ella.

Of course I did the same by buying the 3-CD The First Lady of Song compilation for her sweet version of "Baby, Don't You Go Away Mad".

Yep, I heard it at a Steven workshop a few months ago and went right out and purchased it.

I agree the rest of the CD is rather disapointing, but I do find the song with Charlie Parker doing some solo Be-boping in front of a big band with ella singing in other parts rather interesting from a listening stand point. I think it's the 4th song on CD 1.

This song will problably be over killed real quick. I played it at WCLX5, 2 weeks ago and 3 other dj's walked up and asked what CD it was on.

I like the Sam Cooke version from Live at the Copa.

Yeah the Ella versions not bad but Big Bill Broonzey's cut will always be, in my books, my all time favorite version.

As Ryan pointed out, it is a staple of the current Stephen Mitchell class. He was in Austin this weekend and it was inescapable. He also played the Sam Cooke version a few times and the live version of Sweet Georgia Brown (which probably came of the same compilation). But, mostly we heard Bill Bailey over and over again.

Which was not a problem at all.

I checked out the track list and I have most of the songs, but that probably won't stop me from picking it up at some point. I keep thinking I have enough Ella, but there is always more out there.

i'd disagree that the rest of the album is disappointing. Rather I'd say rthat for serious Ella collectors it has alot of duplicates.

If you don't want to pick up the 2-disc Ella set for whatever reason, I just discovered that they have the version in question on Apple's iTunes for a just a buck.
