There's a Proper Pair of Jay McShann -- how is this stuff? Should I pick it up? I've heard some exciting stuff about this group; I love their tune on Engine Room, and I heard Charlie Parker got his start there. Did they have any vocalists? Is Charlie Parker on the Proper Pair?

Bird didn't get his start there, he came back to his hometown of Kansas City after a stint in New York and played with McShann in the early 1940s. After McShann, he joined back up with Dizzy Gillespie in Earl Hines' band and found his way back to New York.

I've not heard the Proper Pair recordings, but Jimmy Witherspoon is a vocalist that was with McShann in several of the recordings of his I have from this era.

McShann is probably my favorite bandleader behind Basie and Ellington.

I love Walter Brown's vocals with McShann.
