Nat King Cole

I've been listening to the Nat King Cole Trio Transcriptions today (1938 and 1939).
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... c&n=507846 (this is the box set; I have the first 40 tracks packaged as Vol 1 1938 and Vol 2 1939).
It's a much different sound than his later material, and it reminds me a lot of the stuff that Casey MacGill does - I'm curious now to ask Casey about it next time he plays here.
What other Nat King Cole music do you particularly like?

-Nat Cole proper box: all the essential Trio recordings plus some of the great pop tunes with strings
-The Complete After Midnight Sessions: basically Trio tunes with a drummer and guest star on each track
-Big Band Cole: Nat Cole with Count Basie Orchestra! not as incredible as you might be thinking, but it is pretty good. Many of the tunes are pop rather than swingable jazz

Cole's contribution to jazz and his achievements as a pianist have been overshadowed by his later fame as a solo vocalist. The early material, much of which is listed above, swings harder than most larger orchestras.
I also recommed The Billy May Sessions.

I've seen a lot of random inexpensive Trio comps. They're a good way to go if you just want a sampling.

You can also get some of Nat King Cole earlier piano work on Lionel Hampton's "Tempo and Swing" and Lester Young Trio (with Buddy Rich).

I have some of this stuff with Hampton, mostly via my Hampton CDs, and they're my favourite period of Cole's music ('Tempo and Swing' is a great CD btw).
