Chris Barber covered a bunch of Bechet stuff once he moved to France. The liner notes mention how difficult it was for the clarinet player to emulate Bechet's sound.

When I think of clarinet, I think of something more like Goodman, Shaw and Herman.

Those are the swing era giants. But the earlier giants included Dodds, Noone, and Bechet. Edmond Hall was another giant who played in several eras.

Bechet played both Clarinet and Soprano Sax. I don't mean that to mean he knew how to or could play both He played both at different times throughout his career and on different tunes.
"I don''t dig that two beat jive the New Orleans cats play.
My boys and I have four heavy beats to the bar and no cheating!

he went back and forth on the instruments, you just have to read the liner notes. although it seems that latter in life he played more sax.

I just wanted to reiterate my love of Bechet's instrumental recordings. Last night, for the first time in a while, I listened to Bechet in depth, and I was again blown away. I put "I've Found a New Baby" (Past Perfect box, disc one) on repeat, and listened over, and over. I especially love the part at 2:00, where the drummer goes into overdrive.

I heard Dr. Michael White at Jazzfest this year, and he did a Bechet song - he REALLY channeled Bechet. I don't think he sounds like Bechet in his recorded work so I was super impressed that he could emulate him when he wanted to.

What are some favorite tracks everyone likes on the proper box set? I like "I Found A New Baby" from Blue Horizon and "I'm Coming Virginia" from Blues in Thirds.

Off the top of my head (and without my reference lists), ... Blackstick, Sweet Patootie, Summertime and Lazy River.
