Without digging too deep into the politics of definitions - I have no trouble with the idea that only a portion of what I play fits solidly into the category of a stricter definition of Lindy Hop music - that being said - I want some recommendations to pick up some more of that stuff...

(not cuz I'm short, I recently split it out into it's own section, and saw that about 80 of the 220 or so discs I regularly travel with are strictly swing era - but when I'm not picking up new stuff in the genre I find I pay less attention to it.)

I really dont want to start up this argument of what is considered swing music, lindy hop music, etc.... Not to sound holyer than thou with that request, but I am a bit overloaded with all the discussion about that.

haha. not like that. i was just curious. i'm not that familar with his work.
i'm sure i have him on random stuff, like the commodore box set, and
i know he makes smart comments on a live buddy hackett set. so i'll
keep my eyes open for that set and give it a listen.

going back to the original question a guess a lot depends on what you
already have. perhaps we could come up with a list of recommendations
for "must have" recordings (maybe both swing era and modern) as a
product of the dj list.

with regard to new stuff, some things i recently got that were interesting

Count Basie _The Octet Sounds
- (not exactly swing era, but documents basie small 1950 band with buddy defranco and clark terry)
Count Basie _1944 - (some live footage with lester young back from the war)
Artie Shaw _Live in Hotel Lincoln NYC
Harry James _Record Session- 1939-1942
Harry James _Yes Indeed
Billie Holiday: Lady Day Swings
- (has an excellent "Swing Brother Swing"; she's accompanied by sidemen from the Basie and Goodman bands)

I've got a copy of that on a real generic "Blues By Basie" LP, and I recently picked up another LP with some Octet stuff, and just noticed the similarity in sound.

yes, it does. this is the cd - http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... en97lskr5t - and it is one of those multimedia cds with pictures, brief bio, and very brief discography.

it's kind of interesting hearing basie with a strong clarinet, like on
the one o'clock jump, almost like a benny goodman small group.

After about 2 months on backorder I finally got Harlen Leonard and His Rockets. While I am still digesting it, I've already found some great cuts of the 23 tracks.

i was just listening to him on a road trip. Drop Me of in Harlem and Cherokee, have some sweet cuts too. i'm not too familar with his post 40's stuff though. i think jesse has one of his latter albums.
