They both work fine, my friend, especially if, as Swifty did, they are done to shake things up, not to dominate the music.

I welcome the diversity; you need not justify it, Swifty. Music didn't stop evolving between the time Lindy Hop faded away and the time it revived a few years ago; we still have a lot of catching up to do!!

September Friday Producer's Picks: Variations on a Theme

As I've been incredibly busy the past month, I've bringing back another one of my past shows for September: I've selected sixteen of my favorite swinging standards and am presenting four different treatments of each. From "All Of Me" to "Things Ain't What They Used To Be", from Ella Fitzgerald to Depeche Mode, these are some memorable melodies done differently by a variety of artists.

About 1/3rd of the songs on here don't swing (using the loosest definition) at all.

I understand playing a few songs that are different to mix things up. But why such a high percentage? Just curious.

Nate Dogg, you're going against your "never play an artist more than once a session" creed.

Heh.

Yeah, creeds are made to be broken. In any case, it is a four hour show, not a 90 minute set Moreover, as Reuben pointed out a long time ago, it is a radio show.

If I ever get around to asking for a session, I'm going to play "Unskinny Bop."

Sounds like a pretty swinging set to me (yes, I have listened to it in its entirety). Nathan, I thoroughly enjoyed your show and have gotten other compliments about it as well. Thanks for throwing in Nina Simone's "Jellyroll". I remember complimenting Lawrence on playing it at a previous Austin exchange but hadn't heard it since. I would thoroughly enjoy this set at a dance, as well as on the radio. Keep up the great work!
