Start at the beginning of your set of cd's that you take with you DJing. Count 5 in and list the 5th track for 5 songs. 5x5x5. Would it be a good dance set if these 5 songs were played?

For me they are:
1-Make a counrty bird fly wild-Henry Red Allen and his New York Orchestra
2-Miss Brown to you-Billie Holliday Quintenstial 1933-35
3-Uknown track-given to me from Catherine Kane, blusey and groovey about 110 bpm's, with a number of breaks.
4-Now will you be good-Count Basie-decca recordings/CD2
5-I've Got the Sun in the Morning-Les Brown

I would think that this set would be a bit jerky. with song 3 being especially out of place, but it would be a good range of tempo's. There is a a heavy emphasis on big band, but this set would work in most places.

1. "In a Sentimental Mood" - Django Reinhardt
2. "Night and Day" - Billie Holiday
3. "Summertime" - Billie Holiday
4. "That’s All I Ask of You" - Billie Holiday
5. "The Very Thought of You" - Billie Holiday

This might be a fun set for sleepy old folks (all of these tracks are about 100 BPM and are rather sedate), but it'd probably drive everybody else away.

If I counted five CDs from the back of the case, and counted in from the fifth-to-last track on that CD, it would create the following set:

1. "Calypso King" - Atomic Fireballs
2. "Your House" - Jimmy Eat World
3. "The Rumor Weed Song (Credits Version)" - Veggie Tales
4. "Not for Me" - Backstreet Boys
5. "Noise Brigade" - Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

This would be an interesting, if disjointed, set. Lots of variety there.

Pulling from my mini-case of compilations that travels everywhere with me in my shoe bag just in case I am asked to do a short set, the fifth CD is labeled "Instrumental Swing 1". Starting with the 5th cut the set would be...

1. Three Buckets of Jive, Illinois Jacquet
2. Smooth Sailin', Illinois Jacquet
3. Night Train, Ray Brown
4. Kentucky Avenue, A.C., Duke Ellington
5. Information Blues, The Duke Robillard Band

In all it would be about a 27 minute set with a very good opener, a few favorites, and a nice range of tempos.

If I counted five CDs from the back of the case, and counted in from the fifth-to-last track on that CD (one of two mixes I once did as a band opener for Duke Robillard and Doug James at a local blues club called "Middle Earth"), it would create the following set:

1. All About My Girl, Jimmy McGriff
2. Time Of Our Lives, Bonnie Raitt
3. I Love Being Here With You, Barbara Morrison
4. The Darktown Strutter's Ball, Alberta Hunter
5. Jean's Jive, Mississippi Heat

I would be very unhappy with this set. I really don't like the Bill Elliot "Shim Sham Song" and I only keep "Sing Sing Sing" around for the occasional request.

The first three songs are good, but I don't think the order flows very well.

I have gotten better at making compilations over time and this was an early one.

It's funny seeing overlaps. The first time I did this, counting discs 1-5 from the back, I also ended up w/ "Running Wild" & "In the Groove at the Grove." Running Wild was off a mix CD for me, but it is fun to speculate what CD someone's pulling their #5 from by track alone.

This would be a real crappy set.
Song 1 one is some Cha-cha blues number
Song 2 is a great version of the song, but over half of the song is breaks
Song 3- is really mellow,
Song 4- is really slow west coast blues
Song 5 is jazz

Song 3 and 5 might have there place sometime in an evening. 1,2, and 4 I would never even think about playing to dancers.

I think it would have been easier for me to roll a d20 than to figure out Roy's mathematical CD configuration. Anyway, here goes nothing...

d20 would be fine. I was wondering how often if you took 5 random songs from your collection would it make a good set. I'm seeing not very often.
