MR DJ 5x5

Start at the beginning of your set of cd's that you take with you DJing. Count 5 in and list the 5th track for 5 songs. 5x5x5. Would it be a good dance set if these 5 songs were played?

For me they are:
1-Make a counrty bird fly wild-Henry Red Allen and his New York Orchestra
2-Miss Brown to you-Billie Holliday Quintenstial 1933-35
3-Uknown track-given to me from Catherine Kane, blusey and groovey about 110 bpm's, with a number of breaks.
4-Now will you be good-Count Basie-decca recordings/CD2
5-I've Got the Sun in the Morning-Les Brown

I would think that this set would be a bit jerky. with song 3 being especially out of place, but it would be a good range of tempo's. There is a a heavy emphasis on big band, but this set would work in most places.

1. "In a Sentimental Mood" - Django Reinhardt
2. "Night and Day" - Billie Holiday
3. "Summertime" - Billie Holiday
4. "That’s All I Ask of You" - Billie Holiday
5. "The Very Thought of You" - Billie Holiday

This might be a fun set for sleepy old folks (all of these tracks are about 100 BPM and are rather sedate), but it'd probably drive everybody else away.

If I counted five CDs from the back of the case, and counted in from the fifth-to-last track on that CD, it would create the following set:

1. "Calypso King" - Atomic Fireballs
2. "Your House" - Jimmy Eat World
3. "The Rumor Weed Song (Credits Version)" - Veggie Tales
4. "Not for Me" - Backstreet Boys
5. "Noise Brigade" - Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

This would be an interesting, if disjointed, set. Lots of variety there.

Cool idea!

Hmmm,

Pulling from my mini-case of compilations that travels everywhere with me in my shoe bag just in case I am asked to do a short set, the fifth CD is labeled "Instrumental Swing 1". Starting with the 5th cut the set would be...

1. Three Buckets of Jive, Illinois Jacquet
2. Smooth Sailin', Illinois Jacquet
3. Night Train, Ray Brown
4. Kentucky Avenue, A.C., Duke Ellington
5. Information Blues, The Duke Robillard Band

In all it would be about a 27 minute set with a very good opener, a few favorites, and a nice range of tempos.

If I counted five CDs from the back of the case, and counted in from the fifth-to-last track on that CD (one of two mixes I once did as a band opener for Duke Robillard and Doug James at a local blues club called "Middle Earth"), it would create the following set:

1. All About My Girl, Jimmy McGriff
2. Time Of Our Lives, Bonnie Raitt
3. I Love Being Here With You, Barbara Morrison
4. The Darktown Strutter's Ball, Alberta Hunter
5. Jean's Jive, Mississippi Heat

the fifth Lindy compilation that I made for DJ purposes, starting with the fifth track

Route 66 - Nat King Cole
Saturday Night Fish Fry - Louis Jordan
Jersey Bounce - Ella Fitzgerald
Shim Sham Song - Bill Elliott
Sing Sing Sing - Benny Goodman

I would be very unhappy with this set. I really don't like the Bill Elliot "Shim Sham Song" and I only keep "Sing Sing Sing" around for the occasional request.

The first three songs are good, but I don't think the order flows very well.

I have gotten better at making compilations over time and this was an early one.

oops, i see my first post was a little confusing. I meant count to your 5th cd, track 5. Then count 5 more cd's in to your 10th cd track 5, 15th track 5, 20th, and 25th, cd.

From my small CD case that I carry with me, mostly mixed CDs, randomly placed inside the case.

Tuxedo Junction - Harry James
Blackout - Erskine Hawkins
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Lou Rawls
Apple Honey - Woody Herman
Fish Fry - Gene Krupa with Anita O'Day and Roy Eldridge

From back to front:
I Confess - Yoko Noge
Things ain't what they used to be - Duke Ellington
In the Groove at the Grove - Chick Webb
How Lucky Can One Guy Be - Indigo Swing
There'll Be Some Changes Made - Artie Shaw

Both would be very jerky, both in terms of style and tempo.

Uh, in that case...

1. Three Buckets of Jive, Illinois Jacquet
2. Can I get to the Funk, Bluezeum (reached my westie compilations)
3. Tickle Toe, Basie
4. Paper Moon, Natalie Cole
5. Never knew Love Like This Before, Stephanie Mills (dropped onto a wedding party compilation)

Really crappy set.

Here's mine:

1. The Basement Blues - Sidney Bechet
2. In A Mellow Tone - Ella Fitzgerald
3. Jersey Bounce - Benny Goodman
4. Saturday Night Fish Fry - Louis Jordan
5. Well Git It - Tommy Dorsey

The only thing with me is that I don't keep my CD's in order, so the order would change over time.

Ernie Andrews - The Hunt is On
Charlie Barnet - Things Ain't What They Used to Be
Count Basie & Sarah Vaughan - Until I Met You
Count Basie & Joe Williams - One O'Clock Jump
Big Maybelle - Rain Down Rain

a little uneven I'd think

Ya mean I gotta have 25 CDs?? OK

Come On Baby, Fletcher Henderson 220bpm
One O'Clock Jump, Basie 170 bpm
Running Wild, Jimmie Lunceford 248bpm
Stampede In G Minor, Elmer Fain 214bpm
Ball of Fire, Gene Krupa 195bpm

From the back:

What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry, King Pleasure 135 bpm
Do You Or Don't You Love Me, Mora's Modern 174 bpm
Caravan, Eddie Chamblee 220 bpm
Blackstick, Sidney Bechet 186 bpm
Castle Rock, Johnny Hodges, 170 bpm

Hmmmm. Nither one is a good Lindy Groove Set

1. Charlie Barnet - I Never Knew
2. Bunny Berigan - Rinka Tinka Man
3. Jimmy Dorsey & Helen O'Connell - Arthur Murray Taught me Dancing in a Hurry
4. Duke Ellington - Work Song
5. Dizzy Gillespie - OW!

Titlewise, I think 5 may more appropriately follow 3.

It's funny seeing overlaps. The first time I did this, counting discs 1-5 from the back, I also ended up w/ "Running Wild" & "In the Groove at the Grove." Running Wild was off a mix CD for me, but it is fun to speculate what CD someone's pulling their #5 from by track alone.

From the back, I hit my some of my Blues music:
1-Jimmy Rushing-Baby don't tell on me
2-Buddy Guy-I love the live I live
3-Count Basie Qunitet-Blues Au four
4-Johnny Otis Show-Since I met you baby
5-Ellington/Hodges-Squeeze me

This would be a real crappy set.
Song 1 one is some Cha-cha blues number
Song 2 is a great version of the song, but over half of the song is breaks
Song 3- is really mellow,
Song 4- is really slow west coast blues
Song 5 is jazz

Song 3 and 5 might have there place sometime in an evening. 1,2, and 4 I would never even think about playing to dancers.

I think it would have been easier for me to roll a d20 than to figure out Roy's mathematical CD configuration. :) Anyway, here goes nothing...

Nice Work If You Can Get It - Ella Fitzgerald
If I Could Be With You - Joe Williams
Corcovado - Sarah Vaughan
Do Your Duty - Billie Holliday
L.O.V.E. - Natalie Cole

From the back... (which sounds interesting so to speak)

Sanctuary - Miles Davis
Bang Goes The Drum - Blossom Dearie
Rock House - Ernie Freeman
I Only Have Eyes For You - Rosemary Clooney
C'est Si Bon - Eartha Kitt

Needless to say, I'll be taking the next few weeks to rearrange not only my CD collection, but my apartment as well.

d20 would be fine. I was wondering how often if you took 5 random songs from your collection would it make a good set. I'm seeing not very often.

1. Sweet Georgia Brown - Louis Armstrong
2. The Wrong Idea - Charlie Barnet
3. Swinging the Blues - Count Basie
4. What a Dream - Sidney Bechet
5. Pagan Poetry - Björk

It'd be all right, except for the Björk song...
