Rawls Sings Sinatra--UGH!

#1 Post by Lawrence » Thu Sep 04, 2003 2:38 pm

FYI, I was looking forward to this album coming out. Nathan got a hold of an advanced copy when a local store sold its promotional copy, and I borrowed it to see how it was.

It is awful. Rawls sounds like some old lounge singer who jots in and out of the rhythm as if he was not there when the music was recorded; perhaps it was done karoake like Sinatra's "Duets" CDs were done, but it is NOT good. The one good song that fits Rawls' current style is "One For My Baby and One for the Road."

I love both Rawls and Sinatra, and eagerly looked forward to this CD because it had so much potential, but it is really pretty lame.

Just to clarify, I did not mean to imply that Nathan was a fool to buy it or to criticize Nathan for owning it. I really appreciate his letting me listen to it so that I didn't go out and buy it, myself. The CD had potential, but fell flat on its face.

I might have bought that CD, so thanks.
Not because I like Sinatra, but because Lou Rawls has a couple of gems. Despite the fact that it is over played, Rawl's westie stuff still fills the floor. Lou Rawls is a freakin' rallying call for some dancers, so he's had a real impact. His fast version of "Muddy water" kicks ass, his sweet version of "Squeeze me" is sublime.
Sinatra was a big deal -everyone did something with him even Basie and Ellington. Ellington and Sinatra. Man does that CD suck.
