vintage music lovers - how does this label stack up. looks cheap but that may or may not mean much. depending on feedback, i might buy a whole whack of them.

I liked what I heard on a radio show here last week from a Harry James hindsight Box Set. I'm going to buy it when I know I have the cash... However, I don't have any Hindsight releases to really be sure.

I have two box sets (and I think a few single discs) from this label - Artie Shaw: King of the Clarinet, and Big Band Jazz-The Jubilee Sessions.
Very pleased with both sets.

OK so I saw this thread and then I went to Sweet and Hot and BEHOLD there was a Casa Loma CD on Hindsight. So I got it. Sound quality is pretty good (can't hear the drums, as usual for recordings from this period that have been cleaned up), music is alternately sweet and hot -- how apropos.

I'd be interested in what you got and how you like it.

I got a Jimmie Lunceford radio transcript CD on hindsight last week. They also have a Basie from around the same time that has Artie Shaw sittingin with the band.

Thought I would restoke the fire on the Hindsight label.

I have listened to maybe 10 or so of the LP releases. All have been excellent.

I then just found out about some of the box sets on CD from Hindsight. Namely the Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw and Harry James sets.

I bought and just got the Duke Ellington. What intrigued me was the era (1946-1947). This is a completely empty era of Ellington to me. I'm very curious to go through the CD set.

BTW - the box set is wonderfully packaged. The Hindsight LPs always have wonderful liner notes, and the CD packaging of the box set includes all of these wonderful notes.

From my limited experience with Hindsight, I highly recommend them for sound quality and liner notes. Pricing is moderate, but worth the extra $ based on the quality.

Hindsight has been around for a long time now and they were famed for their very high quality in an era when a lot of releases didn't sound so great.

They made their money back ages ago, so I can see them not charging much for their CDs in a marketplace that is likely diminishing.

I've listened to the first CD in the Ellington set. The sound quality is excellent. The performances are excellent.

The drums aren't heard much at all. But there are some dance things on the first disc. Maybe 1/3 of the CD (5 or 6 tracks) would be good for dancing.

Some fine blowing from Taft Jordon on several cuts. Johnny Hodges of course, and the rest of the band is first class (as usual Ellington).
