IIRC, an episode of History Detectives traced that history when someone found a Klan record.

To say the KKK helped even indirectly bring us Jazz is over egging the pudding a bit.

In fact, the 3rd and 4th paragraphs in the article make conflicting assertions regarding the basis for Gennett's economic strength.

Anyway to answer your question, I did know about this before reading the article. I have the production catalog for 1924 and the company recorded a massive array of recording types, lectures, monologues, all sorts of vocal recordings. I think Gennett would have survived without the Klan recordings, just as they did with them.
