VJ'ing

I, uh, VJ'ed with video clips yesterday. It was an experiment of sorts--I know Alex in Seattle does, or did, this on a regular basis, but I had not tried it before. Playlist is below. Most of these you can find on Storyville DVD releases.

It went reasonably well, but for next time, I'd like to find some more 140-170 bpm tunes with good fidelity, since those were the ones that got the local crowd going. Any suggestions?

2007-ULHS-Medium Finals (For Dancers Only) (155 bpm)
1942-Thanks for the Boogie Ride-Gene Krupa (180 bpm)
1941-Shout Sister, Shout-Lucky Millinder (160 bpm)
1946-All the Cats Join In-Make Mine Music (180 bpm)
1941-Buck Privates-Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy-Andrews Sisters (165 bpm)
1943-Chicken Shack Shuffle-Mabel Lee (200 bpm)
1941-Take Me Back Baby-Count Basie (130 bpm)
1941-Barnyard Bounce-Will Bradley (170 bpm)
2007-ULHS-24 Robbers-Fats Waller-Skye and Frida (200 bpm)
1979-Basella-Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald (150 bpm)
1941-I Want a Big Fat Mama-Lucky Millinder (150 bpm)
1957-Three Little Bops-Stan Freberg and Shorty Rogers (210 bpm)
1943-Java Jive-Al Donahue (115 bpm)
1938-Juke Box Joe's-Carol Adams (180 bpm)
1942-'t Ain't No Good-Edna Mae Harris (140 bpm)
1941-Let Me Off Uptown-Gene Krupa (175 bpm)
2003-BSG-Bei Mir Bist Du Schön-Janis Siegel-Kevin & Carla (var)
1941-Buck Privates-Bounce Me Brother with a Solid Four-Andrews Sisters (185 bpm)

How was the sound quality when you DJ'd these?

I picked the best-sounding ones to play, of course. Still, I think there were one or two that sounded too muddy in this particular room.

"Chicken Shack Shuffle" had dancers searching for the beat, and I admit it wasn't terribly easy to hear. I'll try to find another transfer.

"Let Me Off Uptown" had a section that was sketchy, too, but nothing that will prevent me from playing it again.

"Twenty-Four Robbers", the Skye and Frida routine, I've thought of re-dubbing with the original track. The lindylibrary video I used was probably recorded with the on-camera mic, and it's not awesome. Trouble is that you lose the audience cheers and clapping, which I would like to keep. Mixing the two would be ideal, but, I assume, hard. I have not tried it yet.

Not sound quality, but: "Basella" is just too long, even for the birthday jam & snowball that we used it for. It's such a deliciously lovely recording, but freakin' unplayable. Maybe at an exchange or in Herräng in the late morning.

I love that version of For Dancers Only, but let the record show that I did have someone come up to me and not exactly complain, but point out that it was a long track to dance to. When I agreed (it's seven minutes--we did a mixer, but still), he further pointed out that "they just took a three minute song and made it seven without adding anything".

I don't know that I agree, but there's that. :o)

C'mon, people! Gimme more video suggestions!

That totally makes sense, actually - I swear I heard them play the head again mid-song and then launch into solos again to add length.
