"Local" songs

#1 Post by Yakov » Fri Aug 15, 2003 9:34 pm

I like songs that specifically mention a certain place or region in the vocals... here are some... please add to the list for our collective edification.

"Massachusetts," Gene Krupa Orchestra (Proper Box)
any vocal version of "Take The 'A' Train" ("...that's the quickest way to get to Harlem...")
"Stompin' at the Savoy"
"Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans" (who does a good version?)
From the Gaillard proper box: "Windy City Hop," "Broadway Jump," "Palm Springs Jump"

Also: What's the name of the Blossom Dearie song that mentions all the states?

That would be:

"Rhode Island Is Famous For You" by Blossom Dearie, off her compilation Verve Jazz Masters 51

I could list a ton of songs off the top of my head, but it's way too late in the evening for that now. I'll leave you with one great album though:

Peggy Lee - Blues Cross Country

Here's the track listing:

1. Kansas City
2. Basin Street Blues
3. Los Angeles Blues
4. I Lost My Sugar in Salt Lake City
5. Grain Belt Blues
6. New York City Blues
7. Goin' to Chicago Blues
8. San Francisco Blues
9. Fisherman's Wharf
10. Boston Beans
11. Train Blues
12. St. Louis Blues
13. Hey, Look Me Over!
14. Shining Sea

Enjoy.

yeah, well I haven't seen *anything* resembling swing that talks about Seattle ---- all we have to the best of my knowledge is "Seattle" made famous by Bobby Sherman - from "Seven brides for Seven Brothers" - most of you are probably too young to remember this any way (sigh....)
