yes, i did know that! :( :P I would be very unlikely to ever play that, anyway...

(I think I read someplace that it was the number of the hotel where they played.)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Pennsylvania 6-5000 was a telephone number in New York City. (ie PE6-5000)
Only because you mentioned it, I think it's actually PA6-5000. :)

PE6-5000 seems correct.

It is the number of the hotel Pennsylvania. Apparently you can still dial it.

Speaking of which, the phone number for Birdland is JUdson6-5454 (like the Hotel Pennsylvania is PEnnsylvia6-5000). Slim Galliard mentions it several times on his live album, Slim Galliard at Birdland 1951. I highly recommend it.

it's ancient thread re-kindling time.

i'm really enjoying "san francisco bay blues" from don ewell's "denver concert with barbara dane" album (available on emusic and amazon mp3). i also heard barry "big b" brenner do a great version at inspiration weekend (i think) last year (streaming mp3 online).

do you know of another good version?
any other san francisco songs you recommend?

Every once in a while, I play the version on Blues over Bodega, by Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band.

Not very dance-able, and indeed not very PC, but "Hong Kong Blues" by Hoagie Carmichael. I play it occasionally here.

"San Francisco Blues" by Peggy Lee is always popular. Her album Blues Cross Country provides many "local" songs. :)

thanks! i just downloaded this from emusic and i like it. there's a funny glitch 2 or so seconds in--the sound seems to switch between channels a bit. do you have that on your copy, too, or is that a glitch in emusic's encoding?

Happens in my copy too, but if you fade it up a little slower than normal, nobody will notice.

It sounds like an analog tape glitch. I doubt that anyone will be bothered by it - the only sound defect that most dancers seem to notice is if you accidently pause the song for five seconds in the middle
