The clip says it's Troublesome Trumpet by Red Nichols and the Five Pennies - but does anyone know if this fantastic version was recorded and is available?

Good find!

Recorded, yes:

Troublesome Trumpet (Michael Carr)
Vocal by The Three Songles
3-14-1937
New York, New York
Variety VA 545 or possibly also listed as Master M248

Anyone with Lord Discography to find if it was released?

Well, it was released, that's what Variety 545 means. (Rust also lists Vocalion 3816.) But I think the version we hear in that clip is actually a World Transcriptions recording from November 30th, 1936.

And...it's available on CD:

Thanks - but I'm almost certain that's not the one we hear on the video - the transcription one on that CD is much tamer

I've discovered the clip is from a 1936 short Vitaphone film called "Red Nichols & His World Famous Pennies". Troublesome Trumpet starts at around 04.30 -
