Large collection of swing 78s on eBay!

#1 Post by quincy » Mon Jul 04, 2011 3:47 am

I'm dumping my entire collection of swing 78s on eBay. 950+ records, most of them swing era jazz and big-band. I'm moving from a house into an apartment in the city and I don't have room for the records or the players (Victrola and Sonora). I'm starting the auction at only $200, much less than iTunes sells digital copies of the same songs.

Also, if you're interested in either of the players (auctions end today):

Happy bidding!

I'll be very surprised if he gets his minimum bid. Nice music, but very common pop records.

It's really hard to sell music these days. So many DJs just trade MP3s with their buddies and hope they never get caught.

Of course they won't get caught. But will they know which year any given track was recorded, which musicians are on it, or what they looked like?

Then again, maybe things like that don't matter, as long as you keep the dancers happy.

Even more so on a format that very few people now collect.

When I was selling 78s at swap meets 20 plus years ago, I had both collectors and casual buyers buying records for me. Many of the kind of records you have I was selling for a dollar or two a piece. Many collectors already had them, but casual buyers - like folks who had just bought an old jukebox or vintage phonograph - they would buy them. (My best sale was when the production company doing DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS came in and said they wanted 10 feet of 78s. Sweet!)

The market for the more common records is pretty much gone. Scarce and rare records can still bring some money, but as for the rest - IRS deduction time.

Good luck!

Yeah, it was great. I got rid of a lot of unsellable stuff at 50 cents a disc. They had four guys hauling them out. Then the whole scene was cut from the film which was a shame b/c they had recreated a record store from the late 40s. Beautiful job. I went down to the street where they were filming and had transformed half the block into South Central LA in 1948, IIRC. The record store was terrific...totally authentic with listening booths and a listening counter and all the correct records and record posters on display. My friend and I left the scene as a woman was stabbed on the sidewalk down the street from us. It was a crummy area.
