Scat Swing?

#1 Post by omsuperhoops » Thu Jun 30, 2011 11:27 pm

I wanted to make a short setlist incorporating some Scat Swing tracks, I have a few Ella tracks, a couple Sammy Davis tracks, and some by Richard Boone (Thanks Jesse!) Does anyone have any other suggestions, the time period does not really matter im focused purely on dancable scat tracks. thanks in advance!

Check out the tunes of the Casey MacGill Blue 4 Trio (on Amazon and CD Baby). This is a contemporary vintage band from Seattle.

Much great scat singing was done by Cab Calloway (check out his 1935 version of Nagasaki). Also vocal groups Mills Brothers (their '30s stuff), the Cats & the Fiddle, the Spirits of Rhythm and their lead singer Leo Watson, who did some fine work with Artie Shaw.

Don't forget to include a few groovy non-stop-scat classics:
- Clark Terry's Mumbles
- Sarah Vaughan's Sassy's Blues
- Lorez Alexandria's D.B. Blues

And one of my favorite scat duets:
- Joe Williams and Ella Fitzgerald's Party Blues

I'm sure others will come to mind later...

I love Joe Williams, but for some reason I find his scat singing to be not quite right; more towards the gibberish end of things. In other words, lacking the "musicality" of Ella or Louis.

I may however, be just talking gibberish.

All these have been great, much appreciated all of you! any more ideas keep them handy. And I know I may face the wrath of a lot of you guys but Louis Armstrong voice, tilts me a little bit...it works on a few songs but as a whole I prefer him off the mic...

Did we say Mills Brothers yet? Did they even scat?

Wait... what are we doing again?
