His birthday's in two weeks (the 26th of August), so I'm digging through my music looking for some things to play.

Things I've played in the past:
Boogie Woogie (1936)
Bye, Bye, Baby (1947)
Evenin' (1936)
I'm Coming Virginia (1958)
Knock Me a Kiss (1958)
Muddy Water (1960)
Rhythm in My Nursery Rhymes (1937)
Sent for You Yesterday (1938)
Sent for You Yesterday (1952)
Walking Slow behind You (1949)

Things I mean to play but haven't yet for whatever reason:
Exactly Like You (1967; with Earl Hines)
Goin' to Chicago (1939)

I recently bought the Brubeck/Rushing album, but I don't think I'm going to DJ with it. Maybe "Am I Blue"? Not sure. It's good listening, though. I also just got the Goodman in Brussels discs that Rayned mentioned in another thread. I have not listened to those yet.

Anything else you recommend? Love? Hate?

- "Do You Wanna Jump Children?" by Count Basie - Complete Decca Recordings
- "Boogie Woogie (I May Be Wrong)" by Count Basie - Newport 1957
- "Sent For You Yesterday" by Count Basie - Newport 1957
- "Good Rockin' Tonight" by Jimmy Rushing - Rushing Lullabies

Those are a few off the top of my head.

I actually have some of those, and I forgot about them. Excellent stuff. "He Ain't Got Rhythm" is fantastic.

Check out his early stuff, like "Blue Devil Blues" with Walter Page's Blue Devils (1929) or "New Orleans" with Bennie Moten (1930) - it's uncanny, Rushing sounds exactly like he would do 30 years later.

Also, some more Basie songs that I play a lot:

"Don't You Miss Your Baby" (1937)
"Georgianna" (1938)
"I Left My Baby" (1939) - perhaps Rushing's greatest slow blues
"Evil Blues" (1939)
"It's the Same Old South" (1940)

and of course, my favorite late-period Basie song,

"Evenin'" from Basie at Newport 1957. Pure magic.

Can never get enough of early Basie:

Love those rolling R's he uses!

And one that I spin quite often, although the contribution from Jimmy is minimal:

I have a later Jimmy Rushing album I play a lot - I think it's called "Everyday I have the Blues". recorded 70ish.

There is a great version of "Sent for you Yesterday" that is high energy, 185 bpm. There are also some really great blues torch song numbers.

I stumbled across this thread again, and thought I'd post the things I ended up playing. I spread them through the two and a half hour night, so about one in every five songs featured Jimmy Rushing.
