A bit of a stretch that he's still alive?

What are you taking Jazz history lessons from Joe Lanza now or something?
Ha Ha Ha...that's actually pretty funny.

Ok, then let me try again. How 'bout Al Casey?

Yay! Alright, I'm gonna press my luck.

Al Casey is of course a baby in comparison to the still living Lawrence Lucie, who I got the honor of seeing playing a killer St. Louis Blues a few months ago. The trumpet player during that session was Joe Wilder and the piano player was 81 year old John Bunch, although I don't think he played with well known big bands until the 50s or 60s

From this thread I was wondering which old time Blues legends are still with us. People who started their profesional carreer prior to 1945. Here is a list of people I came up with:

Ruth Brown born: 1928, profesional debut: 1945, recorded with Lucky Milander in 1947.

Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Born 1924, 1st recording 1947

David Honeyboy Edwards, Born 1915, played with Robert Johnson in the 30's.

Homesick James, Born 1910, toured the Blues circuit in the 1920's.

Robert Lockwood, JR, Born 1915, played with Robert Johnson in the 1930's

Johnny Otis, born 1921, Recroded with jimmy Rushing in 1945

Pinetop Perkins, born 1913, active in the early 1940's

Snooky Pryor, born 1921, active in the 1940's

Henry Townsend, born 1908, recored 2 sides in the late 1920's active in the 1930's

Of the people who've just been briefly mentioned by name w/o further comment...how many are still known to be playing in public?

I have heard or seen the following playing within the last 6 months:

Clarence "gatemouth" Brown, Pinetop Perkins for Blues. Penny Powell, Frank Wess from Count Basie's reformed big band of 1951. Jay McShann and Illinois Jacquet still play.

The rest I'm not sure about.

Claude "Fiddler" Williams is still alive at 95 years old. He started playing in jazz bands in 1927. Apparently he still does occasional guest musical appearances in Kansas City.

He played guitar with the clouds of joy in 1930 and played guitar with Count basie in 1936 prior to Freddie Green joining Count Basie.

In the Traditional Jazz club is Lionel Furbos who I just saw while in New Orleans. At 92, he really stuck out amoung 10+ bands I saw at the Satchmo Summer Fest...

Oscar Peterson still tours. He's been through Chicago twice in the past 3 years. The man can still bring it.

I make it a point to see the older legends whenever they are in town. I missed Ray Brown when he came through Chicago and 3 months later he passed away.

Come to Seattle! Oscar Peterson is playing at Jazz Allley Sep 2 - 7. A bunch of us are going to be able to see him, thanks to Kevin T.'s posting on the Seattle forum.

I'm really looking forward to it!
