How Am I Doin' Hey Hey

#1 Post by Jonas » Mon Mar 02, 2009 11:02 pm

"How Am I Doin' Hey Hey" has haunted me for years now.

I have the Fletcher Henderson version from 1932 off of "Yeah Man" [Hep 1016], but have been searching to no avail for a certain modern, kick-ass recording of it that I've heard played at many jams by a certain dj, but from whom I've never been able to extract enough information about the particular version despite both subtile and straightforward questions about who is the band leader, trumpeter, singer, and what is the recording year etc.

I have no sound or video clips, just the song title.

Any thoughts? (I know, with so little information it's kind of hard, but I figured you guys are the ones who'll eventually solve it!)

i only have these:

1932 don redman, "shakin the african" (hep)
1935 louis prima, "complete brunswick & vocalion louis prima & wingy manone" (mosaic)
1944 svend asmussen, "oh! you jive thing" (p-vine records)
2005 steve lucky, "some like it hot"

the steve lucky one is the only one i'd call modern, it's about 200 bpm. i wouldn't call it kick-ass, but who knows?

the asmussen one i *would* call kick-ass. it has scatty lyrics, a clarinet solo, and, of course, some violin. no trumpet solo, though.

rayned probably has seventy-five versions he can list here. :o)

That's not really a song on my radar. I only have the Don Redman version, which, from a quick listen, I prefer to the Fletcher Henderson one that you mention.

http://www.lordisco.com/ lists quite a few recordings, including the following after 1950:

Sharkey Bonano (1952)
Magnolia Jazz Band (1954)
Magnolia Jazz Band (1956)
Franz Jackson (1957)
George Kelly (1984)
Franz Jackson (1990)

The Steve Lucky one that Lipi mentioned (not on lordisco, but on allmusic) sounds lively with jam-friendly hand-claps ... is that the one you mean ? ...

Incidentally, I've seen Shazam on the Apple iPhone identify songs. You just press a few buttons on the phone, and it tells you what's playing. Great for finding out what's playing ...

Great song...

It's unfortunate the DJ won't tell you details of the song he/she played. What's up with that?

BTW I can't find that Svend Asmussen Cd anywhere on the web, where did you purchase it?

Lipi said it was on this CD on the Japanese P-Vine label (may be hard to find though) -

There is also a version recorded in 2005 by the Swingsations, a great small band lead by Jim Ziegler, the trumpet player in Jonathan Stout's Campus 5.

Have you tried looking up the song on Allmusic.com?

I met several DJs who don't seem so eager to share the titles of what they play. There is a local DJ who usually answers questions on his songs with an "I don't know the titles". And in at least a couple of occasions, I had DJs giving me wrong titles.

Thank you for all your answers. Searching on Allmusic for "How'm I Doin'? (Hey, Hey!)" instead of "How Am I Doin' Hey Hey" as my Henderson title suggested gave more hits, but no bingo yet. I will tell you if i find the right one. I hope it's still as good as I remembered it to be. Haven't heard it for a while now...

There are several in the iTunes music store . . .

Modern ones are by

Midnight Serenaders
Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums
The Pasadena Roof Orchestra
The Swingsations

none of them struck me as "kick-ass". :(
