I'll have to look for those. Allmusic states that George Kelly was with both the original and latter version of the Sultans. I have his Don Redman cd, but haven't seen the others.

New Orleans Jazz Vipers "Live on Frenchmen Street" [recorded live at the Spotted Cat which was one of my fave hangouts] - they played at the Sunday afternoon event.

I just bought Volume 2 from Reader's Corner in Raleigh. It's surprisingly killer. I don't recognize any of the musicians or most of the track titles (If You're a Viper is the exception) and yet the music is strongly reminiscent of Fats Waller with a horn section. I played it for nearly every dancer I encountered during the weekend and people seemed to really dig it. I want the other 3 CDs now too...

Just listened to some of the samples. Nice swinging groove, although for me the piano improvisation conflicts with the danceability.

Great album. I've largely retired it in favor of more up-tempo music but it's still got a prominent place in my book.

This was one of the best value purchases I have made. A 10-CD Duke Ellington set from the German 'Membran' label. Good remastered sound quality. Amazingly cheap price for the quality of the music and sound. Lots of danceable tracks.

I decided I needed to fill some gaps.

Trivia fact: The Gene Krupa Proper box is the first one I ever bought, before I even knew what a Proper box was, and I think it is also the first one they ever released.

I just started to listen to the Webb Proper box and I have to say actually I'm a little disappointed with some of the material. Oh well...

In my experience, the Proper box sets aren't all they are cracked up to be.

Well, a lot of us own them and are pretty happy with them. I personally get a lot of value for the money for them.

The Proper Sets for me are marvelous. I own about 10 or so, and everyone is a great value. Cheers to Proper Sets!!!
