Complete Jazz Series availability

#1 Post by lipi » Mon Dec 08, 2008 9:04 pm

this probably deserves its own thread, so we don't pollute the emusic one too much (nor the "rip chrono" thread, which appears to have drifted somewhat, too).

if you live in the u.k., you may wish to note that "the complete jazz series" is also available on amazon.co.uk.

no, amazon does not let you buy .co.uk tracks in the u.s. (yes, i tried).

some albums are also available on other sites--play.com has a few, for example (also based in the u.k.) and cm-store.fi (more expensive) has them all, i think.

For completeness (no pun intended), a list of all of the albums available on eMusic in the series so far is here:

and if you live in the u.s., and want to see what you're missing, you can use google to see the goodies on emusic. you can play the samples, even.

(the chrono series that's being released on emusic in the u.s. now has some overlap with this series.)

And for more complete completeness... how about a recap by someone more authoritative than me as to what all the fuss is about - i.e. what makes this 'Complete Jazz Series' collection so 'must have' ?

Recording quality / re-mastering, etc ?

If you're a big completist nerd*, they have every available recording featuring that artist during that specific period. Which is very soothing, if you're a completist nerd*.

The quality can be so-so. As an example, I've found some JSP sets are better quality than some Completes. But it depends on which Complete/which JSP.

If I could get the Chron Classics on CD for a reasonable price, I'd rather those than the Completes on download, because the downloads (via emusic) don't have any liner notes or even complete details. So a song might be marked as 'Jimmie Noone', for example, but in fact be a recording of Doc Cooke's Syncopators. You wouldn't know if you weren't a big discography nerd*. I've also found a couple of errors in the dates on the Completes.

But the postage for CDs to Australia, coupled with the exchange rate, make emusic and downloads a far better option than Chron Classic CDs. :(

*viva la nerd!

I've got quite a few Chronological Classics CDs, and have compared the sound quality of songs with the equivalent Complete Jazz Series download. The Complete Jazz Series actually sounds noticeably better to my ear. (I haven't yet compared the newly available Chronological Classics online). The Complete Jazz versions sound richer and deeper, whereas the same music on Classics CDs often sounds flat in comparison. So in some cases, even though I've already got a song from a Classics CD, I've downloaded the same song from the Complete Jazz equivalent for the sake of better sound.

Really? I thought they were identical - but then I've only compared a few Complete Jazz tracks downloaded from e-music to a few Chronological Classics CDs that I own. This must be investigated further.

If the Chronological Classics are identical to the Complete Jazz Series down to the last digital bit and E-music uses the same mp3 encoder settings for all discs, then the downloaded mp3s should also be completely identical. I'll check later...

Strange, but they are not identical! I checked five different songs (wasted 10 e-music downloads  ) - the file sizes can be quite different - in either direction. Also the tracks don't have the same volume.

The only reasonable explanation I can think of is that Jazz Classics has tinkered with sound from the ripped Chrono Series - filtering and normalizing.

Haydn, can you point to some examples where you hear a difference in harshness? (I could only hear a difference in volume on the tracks I checked.)

To me it wasn't a difference in volume or harshness, more a generally better sound with the 'Complete Jazz Series' downloads. I'll try to give some examples when I have time.

Big (?) news: it appears that Chrono is either back, or that a stack of unsold stock was discovered somewhere.
