Just got this yesterday and it f'ing rocks. Played "Harlem Heat", "Let Me off Uptown", "Big Fat Mama", and "Shout, Sister, Shout" throughout the night tonight... all of them (even the ?270bpm? Harlem Heat) were very well received by the dancers. Sometimes I do this when I get some new stuff and, well, I just feel like it. The "Savoy" is the same version that's on that Decca Big Band Anthology.

Uhm, anyone have any other Lucky Millinder? Doesn't look like there's a whole lot out there... any I should avoid?

I have this CD. Looks like a lot of the same tracks.

I think it's great - it's got the vintage stuff *plus* all that fun jump blues. Some of my favorites so far: Apollo Jump, Shout Sister Shout (overplayed in Seattle a while back), Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well, Mason Flyer, Let me off Uptown, Savoy. I bought it after really liking the Savoy track on the Anthology of Big Band Swing.

I played Fare Thee Well Deacon Jones tonight - everyone liked it. I played Mason Flyer Saturday (one of the tracks from the Harlem competition) - that went over very well - nice good uptempo song

Apollo Jump

#3 Post by djstarr » Thu Jul 03, 2003 1:04 am

*and* I finally know who does Apollo Jump - I heard it a couple of years ago and it's always been one of my favorite songs - when I asked the DJ who it was they were "uh, it's called Apollo Jump but it's on a CD someone burned for me so I don't know who it's by"......

Just stay away from his later stuff...it's not swing at all...

on another note I recomend all Mill's Blue Rhythm Orchestra (which is the same Orchestra before they choose Lucky to lead it).

This stuff is ALL GREAT!!!! good lookin out on getting good music.....

I picked up the APOLLO JUMP CD in February. "Savoy" has become a favorite request with our teens. And I got a request for "Who Threw the Whiskey Down the Well" from someone who had heard it an an exchange the week before I picked up the CD (talk about timing!).

Thanks for the tip about the Mills Blue River band! Definately going to look it up!

That Harlem Heat really got my blood going. 260, 270? It starts off a little muddy, but so much fun towards the end. It helped fill the floor rather than clearing it... So much fun to dance to.

I have Mills Blue Rhythm Band 1936-1937, as well as the Millinder Back Beats CD and Apollo Jump 2 Disc set. All really good stuff. Except the later tracks on the second disc of Apollo Jump. They really moved away from swing in a hurry.

I'm not sure when it was recorded (early 30's, I think), but Mills Blue Rhythm Band's Dancing Dogs has been one of my favorite songs for years - even back when I liked the stuff on the other end of that Backbeats album. :)

The 1943-47 Lucky Millinder Chronological Classics compilation is full of great classic stuff: at least five or six top-notch songs, and several just below top-notch; only a few throw-away songs. And the tempos won't clear the floor of all but the jam-circles, too.

I've been similarly disappointed that he did not record more. :(

Great Selections from the 1943-47 compilation:
Rock Daniel 177
Savoy 190
Shipyard Social Function 194
Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well 163
Fare thee Well, Deacon Jones 155
The Spider and the Fly 174

The index on that CD lists 50 songs. Is it a double-CD?

"Fare thee well..." is great. Playful breaks and opportunities.

I've played "Savoy" and "Shorty's Got to Go" before, but I haven't listened to him recently, so this is a good reminder to check him out some more.

and since I'm tempted to be witty you can always play "Shorty's Got to Go" then follow it up with "Who Said Shorty wasn't Coming Back?" he he he he.
