From Spirituals To Swing [Carnegie Hall Concert]

#1 Post by russell » Sun Sep 28, 2008 10:20 pm

I came across this by accident [reading a NY Times Review of "In Search Of the Blues" - an interesting discussion in itself]
and my the sake of those as ignorant as myself started this thread.
There is a 3 CD collection from the concert (circa 1938)

It looks interesting and I ordered a copy off Amazon.

Anyone DJ anything off this?

i have it, but i never dj off of it. as i recall, the sound isn't very good, and of most tracks there are better versions for dj'ing on other albums.

really fun to listen to, though. golden gate quartet rules.

And so does synchronicity. I DJ:d their "Stalin Wasn't Stallin'" tonight. Didn't go over too well, which I should have predicted - a capella seldom does, no matter how much rhythm it has - but it was fun to try. I've loved that song since I heard Robert Wyatt's version in the 1980s. (For purely musical reasons, never mind the naive lyrics.)

I hadn't heard of that concert - it looks like a great CD set :). I have never knowingly DJ'd anything from this, or heard anyone else do so. Just listened to some of the samples, and on quite a few, the sound quality isn't good enough to DJ from. But others seem fine. I like the variety of the music played.
