The one and a half star AMG review sums it all up. Many songs have drop outs and are clearly chewed up copies of recordings that are on other records. They couldn't even bother to list the tracks correctly.

in taiwan i saw a 10 CD box set of louis armstrong purportedly complete from 1923 to 1945 or 1949 or something.

i really wanted it, but then i realized i had about 10 louis cds covering that exact same era already, plus i didn't know whether it would suck or not.

so i got a 5 cd edith piaf box set instead.

i kind of regret not getting the armstrong, because it was less than a hundred bucks, US.

sigh.

The inside is even worse. Each disk has the same awful pic of Louis tinted to some alien color: red, green, blue, purple and orange. I guess some kid did these pictures on a computer at school.

Jackie Wilson and Count Basie. I just couldn't wrap my brain around "Chain Gang" and "Respect" done with a big band sound.

Anything from Jazz Tribune, also listed as "The Indespensable _____."
I've got the Jack Teagarden one, and that was a waste. I listened to many others at the BPI in Paris last summer.
Okay, so the liner notes are long and they're excellent French practice! However, the song selection is usually blasé and the remastering shoddy.

The covers look like a newspaper, like this:

I own the Earl Hines set and the Benny Carter and enjoy both of these for radio DJ'g.

Katie, these Jazz Tribunes are hard to find around here. I think many are out of print. If you would like to part with the Benny Goodman, let me know.

I'm certain for my use, I could find lots of stuff for radio work.

Drop me an email or PM if you want to part with the set.

Jerry, just an FYI, I do see various Jazz Tribune sets on eBay quite frequently, you might want to keep an eye out there.

The Lionel Hampton 2 Disc set I have from Jazz Tribune is great. Has some rarities I haven't seen most other places.
