I stumbled across a lecture about Duke Ellington today at http://www.teach12.com/ttcx/EllingtonLecture2008.aspx

The web site indicates the lecture MP3 is only available through March 31, 2008, so it's probably on borrowed time already. You may want to grab it while you can.

Lecturer says that Paul Whiteman changed his 'original name' to take a name that reflected the fact that his music was for white people - White man.

Hahahahaha....

Maybe Gang Starr's Jazz Thing was a source.

Is that reference buried in that 'song' there?

Hard to believe a professor would pull his info from a source like that.

I just e-mailed him and asked him the source was....?

the prof owns up

Dear Mr. Blackman,

I expect your name gives you a special interest in this topic! You are one of many people to write to me about this issue, and I'm sorry to say it's something about which I was wrong.

I had found the assertion that Whiteman had adopted this name in an old history of jazz, but have since been put right by many listeners who confirm that it was his real name.

Sorry about my mistake, and thanks for listening to the Teaching Company lectures.

Sincerely,
Patrick Allitt
