Harlem Hamfats

#1 Post by fredo » Mon Apr 21, 2008 1:27 pm

I became aware of this band after buying a CD of reefer tunes from the 30's, but have since seen their name pop up here and there on this forum.

After reading their Wikipedia page I found their history, though brief, to be interesting.

Listed of their discography included:

2004 Let's Get Drunk and Truck Swing jazz Fabulous
1997 Hamfats Swing 1936-1938 Swing jazz EPM Musique
1994 Harlem Hamfats, Vol. 4 (Import) Swing jazz Document Records
1994 Harlem Hamfats, Vol. 3 (Import) Swing jazz Document Records
1994 Harlem Hamfats, Vol. 2 (Import) Swing jazz Document Records
1994 Harlem Hamfats, Vol. 1 (Import) Swing jazz Document Records

Are there other discs that people could recommend, or is this pretty much it? Any favorite songs? My first encounter was Weed Smoker's Dream, which eventually was adapted to become Why Don't You Do Right?

As a jazz collector, I'm interested, but as a swing dj I'm concerned about sound quality. Someone mentioned finding remastered recordings somewhere?

I found out that the "Let's Get Drunk and Truck" is the CD with the better sound quality. I've heard the title track played at a dance and it sounded fine from what I recall.
