Just thought I'd say Hello. Signed on a few months ago after asking a few questions to a DJ at the ALHC in stamford, ct. He suggested checking
swingdjs, and I've learned a few things by reading the forums.
I've been DJing during the band-breaks at the community swing dance here and having fun with it. My initial desire to play the music came from
my frustration with less-than adequate band performance, and the need to get 'something going', at least during the band-breaks. Then there was the problem of music currently being played at the breaks- stuff like "The
Pink Panther Theme" and other disruptive music. So I hung around the
DJ area until an opportunity arouse and jumped in. Now I'm the regular band-break DJ and enjoy offering swing music that gets you 'off the chair and onto the floor!' I'm getting compliments, few requests, and the floor
is full so I'm happy! Lots of stuff from the Forum is of interest and useful,
and I'm discovering my "hidden DJ-self".
As I've read here, the development of picking the music is a lot like the progression of dancing (or other things), you get better the more you do.
And there is a rhythm and flow to the entire evening, including the breaks,
that needs to be felt, just like the song itself, the selection of songs to follow, and the dance moves themselves.
Well, I haven't done anything like this writing for a long while, hope it's
not too weird. Be seeing you....
