Heavenly Swing

#1 Post by Eyeball » Sun Jun 03, 2007 9:57 pm

Every now and when I come across some Swing era pop tunes or instrumentals that have either a gospel flavor or genesis, or have some kind of Biblical or faith-based or religious background. Most are fairly rhythmic, except for some very sweet or maudlin pop sloppers

Are there enough of these to make an interesting list?

IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TOO PRAY, LITTLE CHILDREN

A DOOR WILL OPEN

BLOW, GABRIEL, BLOW

SWING LOW, SWEET CHARIOT

SATAN TAKES A HOLIDAY

Some pops that are done by Swing bands-

You're a Heavenly Thing

Pack Up Your Sins and Go to the Devil

A Star Fell Out of Heaven

When Did You Leave Heaven?

But these are pushing the 'boundries' of the stated genre...good to know though! Christian Swing!

'I'm into Christian Swing' - new genre

that's awesome. I love his version of Shadrack. I always thought about playing that and the Beastie Boys riff back to back.

I'm listening to the Marsalis Music Bob French tribute CD today; it's got a really nice duet of Just a Closer Walk with Thee featuring Harry Connick Jr. and Branford Marsalis. I got to hear Harry sing this live at Jazz fest this year, part of a memorial to Alvin Batiste, it was very special.

Sorry to resurrect [HA!] an old thread, but I felt compelled to point out that the Beasties' song comes from a sample of "Loose Booty" by Sly and the Family Stone.

That is all...

When the Saints Come Marching In
And the Angels Sing
Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat

Accentuate the Positive

... God bless Clifford John Mercer, who taught me much about his uncle who wrote the lyrics to that song....
