Favorite Version of "Bugle Call Rag"?

#1 Post by Campus Five » Wed Mar 14, 2007 10:11 am

While the live Goodman version from "On the Air 1937-1938" used to be my favorite until I heard the Metronome All Stars version. That version is sooooo tight. Especially the trumpet hits on the out chorus - so clean and tight and driving.

I also really love the JATP 1944 version, but its really only "BCR" in name only. After they play the intro it basically is just a blues, which is not the actual form of the song. It really is more in the mold of something like "Jammin' the Blues."
"I don''t dig that two beat jive the New Orleans cats play.
My boys and I have four heavy beats to the bar and no cheating!

i almost started this very thread. cool. i love the 1941 metronome all-stars one, too.

other notable mentions: chocolate dandies (1930) and dicky wells (with django) (1937). ah, whatever. it's such a great tune. i like 'em all. (hereby daring someone to dig up a barry manilow version or some such.)

It's got a charleston kinda feel to it, but I like the Red Allen/Billy Banks version. (its on Allen's Ride, Red, Ride compilation)

It always makes me want to bust out dancing.

As for my favs, I'll go with Sidney Bechets version from 1943 (though it blends into Ole Miss) and Casa Loma's 36 version.

Elmer Snowden did a sweet version in 1960, but the banjo gets to be a bit much.

Ugh. I HATED the thought of having to hear that version at a dance hall one day when I listened to it. (Not music that inspires me to dance.)

I love to rip up the floor to the 1941 Metronome All Star Band, off of "Summit Meetings 1939-50" [Fremeaux #5050].

Another great version, which I spin more often mostly because it's slower but still fast enough (slightly above 200 bpm) for many of our dancers, is the mentioned Dickie Wells version (with Django supplying solid 4/4) from 1937, off of "Swing Sessions, Vol. 1" [Frog #50].

I love many others of the mentioned as well, it's a great tune...

This is the version I play most often. It can also be found on Django and his American Friends.

So I'm going to have to go the total other way.
Back to 1931 (13 Sept.) and the Cab Calloway orchestra.
It's amazing the recording of Bugle Call Rag go back to 1916.
So it makes it a very traditional jazz song.
