Benny Goodman Live at the Rainbow Grill. Yale Recordings Volume 6.
You mean this one?GemZombie wrote:My favorite version of Don't Be that way comes from a Lionel Hampton Combo recording. (It's on the first disc of the proper box set - "Hot Mallets").
For a slow dancing alternative to Chick's flag waver, the Hamp combo would absolutely be my pick too, anchored nicely by the solid, "heavy", four-to-the-bar time keeping by Allen Reuss, giving ample space for some great soloing, and then especially those deep sax tones, they really get me goingGemZombie wrote:My favorite version of Don't Be that way comes from a Lionel Hampton Combo recording. Why? Because it is faster?djstarr wrote: The Chick Webb version makes the BG one sound apathetic.
I will reference Reuben's answer here.Haydn wrote:The question about Christopher Columbus seemed to arouse some interest, so here's another one. What's your favourite version of 'Don't Be That Way', composed by Edgar Sampson.
No, it has more "jank" sound. Thumpety thumpety rhythm; or to me the Chick Webb one is more "hot" while I find the BG one a little "sweet", nothing to do with tempo. I also like the little saxophone trills during the last chorus.Eyeball wrote:Why? Because it is faster?djstarr wrote: The Chick Webb version makes the BG one sound apathetic.
This is my favourite too. It's one of those friendly tempo/chunky rhythm versions that gets a slumpy crowd up and dancing again.GemZombie wrote:My favorite version of Don't Be that way comes from a Lionel Hampton Combo recording. (It's on the first disc of the proper box set - "Hot Mallets").
Need a "judge" remind you what has happened when you've annoyed "juries" in the past?Eyeball wrote:DJStarr uses a word with which counsel is not familiar.
I hate to derail the thread, but I'm not starting a new one solely to address this.GuruReuben wrote:Need a "judge" remind you what has happened when you've annoyed "juries" in the past?Eyeball wrote:DJStarr uses a word with which counsel is not familiar.
I've noticed this about your tastes. Those of us who like the Webb version probably like it because it's not *too* refined.Eyeball wrote:DJStarr uses a word with which counsel is not familiar; namely - "jank".
FWIW - I find the Webb version of DBTW rather clumsy and not too far removed from a voo-dee-oh-doh rinky tink 20s recording.
