Swing Artists who passed in 2006

#1 Post by Jerry_Jelinek » Wed Dec 27, 2006 8:09 am

Happy Holidays Everyone,

I'm looking for a list of people who were performers in the swing era or int he swing style that have passed in 2006. I'm trying to cram in a tribute show for this upcoming Friday (Dec. 29th).

Here is the list I have so far:

Anita O'Day
Kenny Davern
Martha Tilton
Georgia Gibbs
Jay McShann

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Not sure if they can be incorporated into a radio show, but:

- Narvin Kimball, 97. Last founding member of New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band. March 17.

- William P. Gottlieb, 89. Took well-known photos of jazz greats. April 23.

- Maynard Ferguson, 78. Jazz trumpeter known for his soaring high notes. Aug. 23.

- Oscar Klein, 76. Austrian-born, self-taught trumpeter best known for his expressive renditions of swing and Dixieland jazz in the so-called Chicago Style fashion. Dec. 12.

- Ahmet Ertegun, 83. Founder of Atlantic Records (and writer of Ray Charles' hit "Mess Around"). Dec. 14.

- Kenny Davern, 71. A clarinetist and soprano saxophonist who became an acclaimed torchbearer of traditional jazz and swing. Dec. 12.

Maynard Ferguson played with Charlie Barnet's band in the 1940s and is on the famous withdrawn recording of "ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE".
