Like - what are you playing at dances and what are you listening to (Jazz and Swing) in your personal or work time?

At dances and such I play Swing... mostly instrumentals lately I notice.

When I'm in my car I tend to listen to things like Korn lately.

Is Korn some Swing or Jazz group I have not heard of? (see above)

Last night I played some very rare Glenn Miller broadcasts from 1939. Incredible sound quality - the one instrumental standout was a choice version of "One O'Clock Jump" - extended and really miles better than the version of KPStomp that was on there, too.

Also had a vocal version of "Moonlight Serenade" from 1939 - fascinating and ultra rare.

I played both of the above several times.

Far from it. I'm telling you that lately I haven't been listening to much Jazz/Swing outside of my dancing related stuff. It goes in cycles.

Why cycles? Why only outside of dancing stuff?

I'm listening to a lot of Australian jazz lately.
But I'm also having my iPod on shuffle a lot also, so that can be any form swingin' to traditional Jazz.

What I spin at dances has very little to do with what I listen to. Most dancers want the same old, same old. (That way they don't have to listen.) There is the odd occasion I get to spin some different stuff.

I was curious to see what Swing DJs listened to in the Swing and Jazz categories when they were not playing for pay. I didn't really want to read about other tastes - call me a selfish SOB.

Ya, I get burnt out on listening to one style of music sometimes, so I lay off for a bit until the mood strikes me again... I've never gotten sick of anything, just needing a break sometimes.

Interesting. I never get tired of Swing or big bands or Jazz, but I do like other things, too.

And there are so many styles of big band music and Jazz and Swing.

It's that I tend to obsess on things... if I moderated it all I'd never get tired of it, but since I listen to one thing over and over, I need a rest sometimes.

It's just my personality.

What Swing thing do you listen to over and over? I have a few songs that when I play them, they get played several times in a row. Not sure if I wind up 'hooked' on something and play it every day. Great to be that enthusiastic!

Recently I've discovered Red Norvo and Glen Gray, also some new (for me) Glenn Miller. The recording quality is relatively good on all these.

Norvo - great band most of the time in the 30s.

Married to Mildred Bailey, and the couple was called 'Mr and Mrs Swing' apparently . I think the 'swinging' quality of the band is largely due to the arrangements (Eddie Sauter?).

All three of them were masters of subtlety. Plus, the band had good musicians in it.

You cant be too bombastic when all you are playing is a xylophone or a marimba.
