Armstrong's Hot 5 & 7's - Columbia/Sony or JSP remaster?

#1 Post by wspeid » Tue Oct 17, 2006 6:50 am

I'm looking to pick up Louis Armstrong's Hot 5 & 7's recordings and have been reading that the JSP recordings might be the better remastered version. Does anyone have any opinions or preferences?

Thanks.

I have the JSP set and the quality of the recordings is pretty good, considering the age of the material. I have not compared the set directly to the Columbia/Sony set. The JSP set is much cheaper but with uglier packaging, if that matters to you.

If you buy the set that comes in what looks like a book, with bound black and brown cloth covers and really, really nice liner notes, I have some advice.

Do NOT keep the loose CDs inside the book. If you store the book upright, eventually the weight of the CDs will sink into the glue that holds the paper pocket to itself and the glue will coat part of the CDs, rendering them unplayable.

Don't ask me how I know this. :(
