Luau swing?

#1 Post by Platypus » Mon May 19, 2003 5:25 am

I know this topic was brought up on the email list, but I figured that it might be nice to have a thread on the new website (and make it easier to find for the future). Last night, I was given the mission to find theme-related swing songs for an upcoming Luau-themed swing dance at the end of June. Recommendations for Hawaiian-themed music? Beach/water songs? any good ukelele swing? I was told that a limbo stick will make an appearance, so any suggestions other than "Limbo Rock"?

You might want to check out Hula Joe and the Hut Jumpers.

There are some nice songs on that Hula Joe CD. You might also try the Makaha Sons. I have this CD:

and it has a couple of tracks that swing.

Ellington recorded a song with Ivie Anderson in the 30s called "Swingtime in Honolulu."

I like the Mills Brothers' "My Little Grass Shack In Kealakekua Hawaii."

King Oliver recorded a song called "Everybody Does It In Hawaii."

There's also a CD on eMusic called "Slidin' on the Frets" that's a compilation of Hawaiian steel guitar music. It has the aforementioned Oliver recording on it.

Harry "The Hipster" Gibson recorded "I Wanna Go Back to My Little Grass Shack" which i think was located in hawaii.

Check out Big Kahuna & the Copa Cat Pack
They have released two albums, one of them entitled Hawaiian swing. Both are in the style of your theme.

Big Kahuna is on eMusic also, which makes them easier to check out.
