What's that slow number that sounds a bit like ...

... Shiny Stockings, but isn't? It's an instrumental with lots of brass, and, I think, some piano. Sounds just like 50s/60s Count Basie.

Is it obscure? Where have you heard it? How do you define slow?
For example, you could be describing "Li'l Darlin', but that song is on a lot of CDs and pretty common, I figure you are looking for something much more rare.
A lot of songs match your description.

I'm just going to throw a song title out - Satin Doll.
It's an instrumental with piano and brass.
The original post is just a bit vague.

There's always that version of Easy Does It by the Big 18, it sounds very Basie-esque. DJs used to play it a lot, the CD is virtually impossible to find.

Except for the copy i picked up for a bargain on ebay a few weeks ago!.
I'd suggest the track could also be "Corner Pocket" by Basie

It's not obsure. I heard it at The 100 Club in London on Monday, but have heard it before. Speed is about 125bpm (about the same as the slower versions of Shiny Stockings). It's not Li'l Darlin'. It could actually be Oscar Peterson. The riff sounds like Shiny Stockings, but shorter. If I don't find it soon, I'll ask the DJ when I see him and post the answer here.

Nope, not Satin Doll.

You could try "down for the count" or one of the other Frank Foster songs.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll ask the DJ who played it when I see him again, and post the answer here.

Could also be "The Slider" or maybe "Redhead"?

Well. I was listening to some tracks on my iPod the other day, and I heard it again. Guess what? It's
Shiny Stockings
, in its' slower, instrumental version, as on track 17 of the following CD -
Ken Burns JAZZ Collection: Count Basie
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005 ... 821?n=5174
The slightly faster, Ella Fitzgerald vocal version, which I knew as Shiny Stockings is track 18 from this CD -
Ken Burns JAZZ Collection: Ella Fitzgerald
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005 ... 821?n=5174
I've just listened to both versions, and they actually feel quite different, which is probably what confused me. I think the longer instrumental version is better to dance to (in general instrumental versions seem better to dance to than vocals). In this case, I got to know Shiny Stockings as a vocal, and occasionally heard the instrumental without realising it was the same track. In my mind, Shiny Stockings had a singer, and this track didn't.
